Hello you wonderful people,
this post is about something that has been on my mind for a really long time… Everywhere, and everything is full with this topic. Every TV-Show talks about it, every newspaper writes about it and everybody sure has something to say about it on every media channel there is out there and the worst part about it is most of those posts are not helping anybody! are not solving the problem! and most of the time aren’t even in the tiniest way constructive… Millions of refugees coming to Europe is the topic I’m referring too.
It’s a very difficult topic and I’m not trying to judge, all I want to say is that as I hear all these people everywhere talking about how unfair it is that we help them, talking about their fears, what all will change, how horrible their lives will be when THEY come and how they plan on changing their habits when THEY come because they are scared of THEM – I cannot help but think:
How many of THEM have you meet so far?
How much time out of your day have you taken out so far just to get to know THEM?
How much of an effort have you made to to just simply talk to THEM?
What do you think would happen if you would invest all this time and energy you are literally wasting on being afraid of something you don’t even know yet and cannot know yet and just went to one of the intercultural meetings where you would get to know THEM?
What I think would happen is that you would start seeing that THEY are PEOPLE!! THEY ARE HUMANS AND THEY ARE NOT AS LUCKY AS WE ARE!!
My little 12 year old cousin asked me the other day : Are you for or against refugees?!
This question shocked me. How can you be for or against people?! REFUGEES ARE PEOPLE!!! And the way this innocent child asked this question gives you an idea of how the mood is in our country right now…
So I’m not saying everything is going great right now, I’m not saying politics is doing a great job or anything like that. I’m trying to be not judgmental but I just want to remind you there are PEOPLE coming to us! Families, Husbands, Sons, Fathers, Mothers, Daughters, Wives, Kids…
Everybody that is coming in our country in need of help is a PERSON!! We need to stop referring to new arriving people as THEM and a „THING“. They are all just people who need help (for one reason or another) and instead of talking so much about the new arrivals maybe go get out of your house, away from your laptop, up of your couch, leave the bar and just talk TO these people. Get to know them, get to know their story and maybe try and invest some of the time you spend talking about THEM – actually talking TO the refugees. And I’m sure then things would look a lot different and I’m sure if we all work together we CAN face this huge challenge head on right now and make this change happen in a POSITIVE WAY.
